Teens turn deaf ear to risks of MP3 players
Reuters - Thursday, March 27
NEW YORK - Teenagers seem to know that loud music can damage their hearing, yet most see no reason to lower the volume on their iPods, a small study suggests.
In focus-group discussions with students at two high schools in the Netherlands, researchers found that the teens were generally aware that blasting an MP3 player could harm their hearing. Yet most said they usually played their own device at maximum volume and had no plans to change that.
Like many teenagers, the students often denied their own personal risk. Most knew the general hazards of loud music, but believed they had a "low personal vulnerability" to hearing loss, the researchers report in the Journal of Pediatrics.
Given this, lead researcher Ineke Vogel told Reuters Health in an email interview, "we strongly recommend parents to inform their children and to discuss with their children the use of MP3 players and the potential long- term, irreversible consequences for hearing capacity."
Parents can also look for signs of a problem, like when a child complains of ringing in the ears or sounds being "muffled," according to Vogel and co-researcher Dr. Hein Raat, who are both based at the University Medical Center Rotterdam.
Based on the focus-group discussions, though, many parents may be unaware of the hearing risks posed by MP3 players, the researchers note. Of the 73 students in the study, few said their parents had warned them that playing the devices too loud could harm their hearing.
It may also be necessary for MP3 manufacturers to make changes, the researchers note in their report.
Many students in the study said they did not know how to tell when their MP3 players were too loud. Volumes at or above 90 decibels are believed to be hazardous, Vogel's team notes, but noise levels need to reach 120 dB to 140 dB to become uncomfortable or painful.
Manufacturers, according to the researchers, could equip MP3 players with an indicator that displays the volume level in terms of decibels, along with a signal -- such as a flashing light -- that goes off when decibel levels reach the danger zone.
For now, Vogel and her colleagues recommend that, as a general "rule of thumb," MP3 users set the volume no higher than 60 percent of its full capacity when using "ear bud" style headphones, like those that come with iPods.
With over-the-ear headphones, they recommend 70 percent as the maximum.
Just as there are safety standards for occupational noise exposure, Vogel and her colleagues suggest that more long-range studies are needed to develop safety guidelines for "leisure-time" noise exposure.

SAMSUNG's solid state memory laptop

Samsung announced that next month it will begin shipping to the Korean market its Q30, the first notebook PC with a solid-state hard disk. The 12.1-inch screen notebook will be equipped with a 32GB NAND flash based solid-state disk (SSD) with a read speed of 53MB per second (300% faster, according to Samsung) and write speed of 28MB per second (150% faster), allowing it to boot up 20 to 50% faster than a conventional laptop.
The lack of moving parts will also allow it to go fanless, making it absolutely silent, plus it'll be more efficient, boosting battery life. Here comes the downside, though: it's going to cost $3700 for all this solid-state goodness, and it's saddled with an old-fashioned Celeron M 753 (1.2GHz) chip. Bring on the Core Duos, and lower that price! Come to think of it, it wasn't too long ago when all laptops cost that much or more. Just think of this as a peek into the future.

We've been patiently waiting for laptops to come out with solid state, flash-based hard drives for ages and it looks like Samsung will be the first company to offer such an item. The first laptop to feature a flash-based hard drive, the Q30SSD sports 32GB of storage capacity and is available right now in South Korea. Compared to traditional hard drives, the solid state hard drive found in the Q30SSD is smaller, faster and runs cooler. It retails for around $3,700, so early adopters will be forced to pay a premium. But you knew that already.
It's clear that the industry wants to move toward such flash-based hard drives and it's probably better for consumers in the long run (no moving parts = less chance of a catastrophic system crash at the absolute worst possible time). Now we just need to wait a little while for prices to drop, then we can swoop and enjoy the benefits.
[IA] Week 12, Day 2: how to decide what to do after graduating?
This morning, while doing the XRD, I talked with my supervisor. Well, it's actually more of she talked to me ;P
The differences between working in R&D and working in INDUSTRY:
1. Do you like to do something new or just repeat and repeat the same thing everyday?
If you like the first one, then do R&D :) My sup told me, in R&D, nothing can be certain. Today you may get this result, tomorrow... another result. You have to find a NEW method to analyze, you have to find a NEW way to do another tests... etc etc.
You can modify the stuffs.
While for industrial work, everyday will be the same (such as manufacturing). You see the same and the same and (again!) the same thing... You want to modify it to be better, but you aren't allowed. Maybe it's too costy? or no use? blah blah blah...
So it all depends to the personality... of course, haha.
2. Do you do better in interpersonal communication or just facing machines and machines?
Interpersonal communication... well, you can do it in managerial thing. Talk and talk and talk =)
The second one... see, all R&D again -_-"
3. Do you want to earn or to spend money?
In industries, everyone in every positions... both low and high, tries to earn money. They do manufacturing, processing, selling goods and stuffs... TO SELL and to earn.
In R&D... You'll spend money and spend again and again... To do research. To find SOMETHING MORE ADVANCED, SOMETHING NEWER... But it takes LONG time to get the result...
She said, for this PCRAM application... it has been begun since late 90's or early 2000... in about 8 years. But still, IT HASN'T BEEN APPLIED till now. So, what the use of it?
Be patient... haha.
She also told me bout SAMSUNG which has distributed solid-state-memory laptop... with no harddisk, only by solid state memory. I'll search through it later on :)

[IA] Week 11, Day 4
So, yesterday morning, we did the Raman for all samples, including GeTe and Sb2Te3 which were sputtered the day before. And in the afternoon, we had lunch with Guimei's friend, his name is Desmond from Industrial Design Year 4 (previously, he had studied at NTU's MPE for 2 years... and he said he got bored, so he switched to another course. of coz, money speaks!!! lol).
All got mixed up... and I don't quite remember the order of our 'talks'.
One thing is that he asked us (Ratna and me) if we can speak Mandarin. No, was our reply.
Then he said that he had Indonesian friends who speak FLUENT MANDARIN. I just replied "Oh." and Ratna just smiled a bit. He REPEATED HIS QUESTION and said it AGAIN, that his friends can speak FLUENT MANDARIN.
That's the FIRST NEGATIVE IMPRESSION.
Once again, he REPEATED IT!!! I was like... "It's none of your business. It's them, not us. Then why we should bother? F*ck y."
Helloooo?????
and he kept questioning why I don't speak Mandarin.
IT PISSED ME OFF!!!
IT'S REALLY NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS AND I DIDN'T NEED TO ANSWER YOUR STUPID QUESTION. HOW INSENSITIVE YOU WERE BY ASKING SUCH STUPID QUESTIONS!!!
I just answer it simply. "I don't like."
He was like... "Eh?? How come? You're Indonesian Chinese right??"
And I just ignored him. buang muka, istilahe.. haha.
I MEAN, HOW CAN YOU BE SO ARROGANT THAT YOU CAN SPEAK ANOTHER LANGUAGE, HAH?
That time I almost said to Ratna. "Talk to him in FRENCH. HE PISSED ME OFF."
And even I want to TALK IN SPANISH, YOU STUPID GUY!!!
On the other hand, he also said stuffs. Bout Guimei's FYP and WHY DOESN'T SHE DO THIS AND THIS AND THIS AND THAT...
WE ARE ENGINEERS.
WE DESIGN FUNCTIONALITY AND USES. NOT LIKE YOU STUPID GUY WHO JUST CARES ABOUT ART AND YOUR STUPID LANGUAGE. YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW IS IT LIKE.
I mean, Guimei has studied in Poly before. And that of course she had more knowledge bout Engineering. I hate a guy who SIMPLY UNDERESTIMATE OTHERS AND THINK HIGH OF HIMSELF.
Well... time to get my clothes.

[IA] Week 11, Day 5
Well... Basically he just asked me if there's any problem here, or if I wanted to know more news from NTU, I can basically approach him.
Also... we talked a bit bout FYP Project.
He said that if I want to be with a SPECIFIC supervisor, I have to mail him/her and propose my own project. wtf... I mean, it's a BIG responsibility to propose one, isn't it?
One more reason, it's to avoid balloting. Because if I wait for the project list and I cannot get the one I want, it's computer balloting... randomly.
Stupid NTU.
That's about it... basically.
My supervisor said I'm hardworking and stuff... o.O walaaoooo does every supervisor talk bout their students like dat? I just wonder... haha.
This morning I did sputteringg using Balzers of GeTe (chamber #1) and Sb2Te3 (chamber #3). And in the afternoon, we did the XRD.
Tomorrow morning will be Raman to test GeTe and Sb2Te3 (I think)... and I'll need to do data processing for today's XRD result. Haiz.
After that... Good Friday ^^v

[IA] Week 11, Day 2
Finally
I was in the 11th place... and yet, nobody asks me a single question :(
I was just wondering... there might be 2 reasons behind it... it's either:
Noone understands what I was talking about
or
My explanation is full enough to add more question
I think it's the first reason... My supervisor said so :P
I presented for less than 8 minutes (is it?) because Winsome didn't even ring the bell. Or maybe she rang it too late... (Ratna's was rung on 8'50)
Well...
Actually today I should be doing Raman Spectroscopy. But the timing is rescheduled to Thursday afternoon... Coz Ratna's supervisor, Ms. Ji Rong, is using it (or so she said).
And that means... I have nothing more to do.
or I should call this... "dibebastugaskan" xD
Tomorrow we'll be doing the sputtering in the morning and XRD in the afternoon.

The Mist

Trailer
In My Opinion
"Not everything you've done is right."
I think, that's the thing The Mist wanna say.
Even protagonist could be wrong. Because he's in the wrong place at the wrong time...
Well... I think this movie is kinda scary.
Think and take your time. One lesson I learnt from here.
Because one action from a person could change the life of many others. And what will you have in the end? Regret.
Rate: 8.5/10
[IA] Week 11, Day 1
I'm dying -.-
Still very confused and I have not enough confidence here... haha.
I'll be the 11th presenter, the 2nd after the 30-minute-break ^^v
I'm still trying to make it 10 minutes.
Yesterday I practiced three times, and they are all still above 10 minutes... around 11 minutes or so. It isn't funny to be reminded during the presentation... I might lose my focus back then -_-"
First gong for 8 minutes, and two gongs for 10 minutes.
Haha.
Hope everything will be alright.
"You can do it," my supervisor said.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, we'll be doing the Raman from 3 to 6 pm.
The day after tomorrow, Wednesday, we'll be doing another XRD from 2 to 6 pm.
Syalalala...
THEN, on Friday, it'll be a PUBLIC HOLIDAY.
Why don't they come here this weekend, I wonder -.-

Jangan Tidur Begadang!!!
kasian donk ntar kanker hati semua...
tapi yah... buat semua itu..yang nomor 1 sama 2 berlaku buat saya...
Life @DSI
Heuhue... I dunno what to answer.
Basically I'm just an IAP student, coming to DSI just with passions to learn and needs to fulfill my AUs requirement... :)
I know that the needs for my coming here is TO STUDY and not to work.
I'm just a student, a NTU student, with no practical knowledge to be applied in the workplace. In university, there is not many resources to learn...
I always feel like NTU is NOT READY to give credit to BioEngineering :)
So here I am know, studying-yet-working at DSI...
Being here for 2 months plus a few days gives me lots of things to be thought.
I've learned how people in R&D work.
I've learned how my graduate life would be if I choose to do RESEARCH :))
I've also learned that people here is nice... :)
Just for simple case: Opening the door.
I am just a student.
Yet the males here, not to mention male researchers and senior fellows, are kind enough for opening the door for female.
For a status of a student o.O
walauuuee....
How can it be eh?
I have no idea. But I've learned, not all Sporean kiashu :))

FREEDOM
There's this husband, saying to his wife:
"Darling, sweetcake, honeypie, I'm going for a vision trip with my friends for a month. Take a good care of yourself, the children, and the house. Bye!"
Is it what's called freedom?
When that question was asked, this is what I had in mind:
If the husband has a freedom, then the wife should also has freedom!!!
Haha. F*ck.
There are two things considerated for freedom:
- Responsibility
- Great goods for others
When you have freedom, it doesn't mean that you don't have any responsibility. You HAVE TO still be responsible for what you've done. And yet, you also need to be CONSIDERATE of others. Don't be like that f*ckin husband who's irresponsible and completely ignore his wife...
NEVER EVER FIND SUCH HUSBAND.
What else for freedom?
That word reminds me of Freedom of Human Rights... according to Act number *blah blah blah* in which I've forgotten.
Yeah, my memory is not that good -__-"
One poem bout freedom, taken from Richard Lovelace:
Stone walls do not a prison make
Nor iron bars a cage
Minds innocent and quiet take
That for an hermitage
Transparently, that means the PHYSICAL FREEDOM.
How about freedom of our THOUGHTS?
Well, no one will know what you are thinking right now. But people may guess. And it's this guess which may give wrong impression for others.
Arrrrrrrrrhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
I'm not used to this technical stuff.
What a hard topic -__-"

MUSIC
Step Up 2: The Street

Trailer
In My Opinion
Watching the first 1 hour is very boring... I just felt like "Please, when will it over???"
The storyline is kinda strange... The happily ever after thing is depicted since the beginning of the movie.
The actor and the actress is just... so so. She's not cute enough, comparing to Step Up 1... and the guy... oh, well, not that attractive, haha.
I was waiting for the final scene, where the final dance should be WOW.
and ok, it's not disappointing.
What I was so disappointed is the camera-taking. I mean, the dance supposed to be the final yet marvelous. But the camera taking didn't support it!!!
I've read once, just like amateur movie... and I HAVE TO AGREE WITH HIM.

1322: Humphrey de Bohun, 4th Earl of Hereford was fatally speared through the anus by a pikeman hidden under the bridge during the Battle of Boroughbridge.[9]
458 BC: The Greek playwright Aeschylus was killed when an eagle dropped a live tortoise on him, mistaking his bald head for a stone. The tortoise survived.
2005: 28-year-old South Korean, Lee Seung Seop, collapsed of fatigue and died after playing Starcraft for almost 50 consecutive hours in an Internet cafe.[45]
1984: Jim Fixx, who wrote "The Complete Book of Running" and lectured about how running and a healthy diet would promote longevity, dropped dead from a heart attack while running. An autopsy revealed he had 3 massively blocked heart arteries.
1899: French president Félix Faure died of a stroke while receiving oral sex in his office.
La Vie En Rose (La Mome)

Trailer
Synopsis
The story is about the life of French singer, Edith Piaf.
In My Opinion
I like the songs, the way they are sung, and everything! :D
Although I kinda bit confused with the plot... which is always going back and forth... I can still stand it, haha ^^
I felt like the acts trying to extract myself into the story... Unfortunately, it didn't work (well, maybe because I have known the story beforehand.. haha).
However, I'm quite satisfied with the movie :)
Rating: 7/10
PS. after seeing this movie, I tried to find the soundtrack, but cannot find it lar

The Orphanage (El Orfanato)

Synopsis from wikipedia:
Laura, with her physician husband Carlos, returns to an orphanage where she had lived as a child with plans of reopening it as a home for sick and disabled children. They adopted a son named Simón who is HIV-positive, though he is unaware of either his adoption or his illness.
Upon moving into the cavernous and hauntingly beautiful home, Simón becomes acquainted with six imaginary friends. Because Simón has always had imaginary friends, both Laura and Carlos play along with his stories. Laura takes Simón to visit a cave near the beach, and he claims to see an imaginary friend. After returning home, he draws a picture of him. He is named Tomás, and he wears a sack mask.
A mysterious social worker appears one day, talking obliquely of some new treatment for Simón. After inviting her in for tea, Laura becomes suspicious and sends her away. That night, after investigating some rattling noises she hears outside, Laura finds the mysterious social worker skulking around the grounds. Though Laura screams for Carlos' help, the woman escapes before anything else occurs. After reporting the incident, it is discovered that there is no social worker registered with the name Benigna, which the woman gave.
One day, Simón tells Laura about a game that Tomás has created for him, a type of scavenger hunt. The game leads them to the locked drawer where Simón's medical records are hidden. Simón reveals to Laura that he knows that she is not his real mother and that he is going to die. When she asks him how he knows that, he responds that his friends told him.
Soon after, Laura hosts a party for the disabled children to welcome them to their new home. Simón begs to show Laura Tomás' house, but after an argument, Laura leaves Simón alone upstairs. When Laura returns to check on him, she cannot find him. She checks in the bathroom at the end of the hall, only to be confronted by a boy in a sack mask who she saw earlier at the party. After she tries to remove the boy's mask, he violently locks her in the bathroom and disappears. No one else at the party remembered seeing the boy because all the children were wearing masks. Simón cannot be found; he has simply disappeared without a trace.
Months later, Laura and her husband go for a drive. It is evident that both are still haunted by the loss of their son. Coincidentally, Laura sees Benigna crossing the street with a stroller, and she makes Carlos stop the car. However, in the tension of the moment, a speeding ambulance mauls Benigna. Though Carlos attempts mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, he says that the woman is dead. Laura reaches for the woman's whistle necklace, and in her dying breath the woman snatches Laura's hand away.
After searching the woman's home, the police discover that Benigna worked at the orphanage long ago. She had a deformed son named Tomás who drowned in the oceanfront cave near the orphanage. Though his face was hidden from the other orphans, they led him to a cave and took off his mask. They wanted to see if he would dare to come out without his mask; ashamed, he refused and drowned overnight once the tide rose.
The desperate Laura then agrees to have a medium explore the orphanage for supernatural clues to her son's disappearance. The medium sees five child ghosts, screaming in pain and dying of poison. Soon after, Laura, following clues she believes were left by Tomás, finds five sacks full of ashes and human bones in the very shed that she caught Benigna snooping in. Laura surmises that the woman had murdered the five children, after their trick had killed Tomás.
Carlos does not believe in the supernatural; he thinks his wife has gone crazy and begs her to leave the orphanage, but she refuses. She insists that she must stay and explore every nook and cranny of the creepy house until it disgorges its secrets. Laura insists that there are too many memories in the house and she needs two days alone to say good-bye.
Carlos goes, leaving Laura alone in the house. After recreating her time in the house as a young girl, she sees the ghosts of the dead friends from her childhood, and they lead her to a hidden door in a closet. Behind the door are stairs leading to a dark basement, and at the bottom she finds Simón alive. However, when she wills the ghosts to go away, it turns out Simón was dead as well, having fallen down a broken banister on the stairwell the day he disappeared. In her frantic search for Simón, she'd unintentionally prevented his escape from the basement. She carries his body up and kills herself by overdosing on her medication.
Laura wakes up, and the ghosts of the five murdered children plus Tomás and Simón, appear before her. Simón asks her to stay and take care of him and his friends forever, and she happily agrees.
Later, Carlos is seen in front of the house where a memorial to Laura, Simón, and the other children of the orphanage had been built. After going inside one last time to say farewell, he spies a good-luck necklace he had given Laura on the floorboards inside the children's bedroom. He hears a noise and looks up as the doors slowly open, and smiles.
Actually, I wanted to give 7.5/10 for this movie,
but suddenly, seeing the last 15 minutes scene... I gave up and rose the score to 8.3/10 :)
It made me cry. Quite alot.
So now, let me begin my synopsis (although you can all read from wiki :P)
Laura and her husband Carlos stay at an orphanage, in which Laura stayed during her childhood. They bring Simon, their adopted son. Soon, Simon meets his 'invincible' friends, people said it's imaginary friends, wateva...
After having his imaginary friends, Simon refuses to meet other children. In a disabled-children party that Laura held, Simon asks Laura to meet one of his friend's house, Tomas. Laura gets angry and asks Simon to join the party, still Simon refuses. She slaps Simon and leaves him alone in his room.
When Laura returns, Simon disappears. She tries to find him anywhere but cannot. Instead, she meets this Tomas guy who locks her in the bathroom.
Months passed. Finally Laura and Carlos find themselves the story of the house, polices, and psychoanalyst (or what eh? i forgot...). The psychoanalyst said she sees five children there, but cannot find Simon. On the other hand, Carlos thinks Laura has gone insane, and he urges to leave the house. Laura stays behind for another two days to say goodbye.
After Carlos has gone, Laura recreates the orphanage as it was during her childhood. And there's also a bedroom with 6 beds (i think). When she plays this "Un, dos, tres, toca la pared", Simon's imaginary friends appear and Laura finds Simon in the basement.
She finds Simon dead. She stucks the basement's door closed with stuffs when she looked for him months before.
She returns to the bedroom and brings Simon with her. Here, Simon's imaginary friends, which are Laura's childhood mates in this orphanage, appears. Simon asks her to stay and tell bedtime stories... <<< here =")
At the last scene, Carlos returns to the house and gives flowers to Laura's grave. At that moment I've just realized that Laura died the days before =((( In the bedroom, he finds the goodluck necklace he gave Laura months ago. The door opens (and I wonder what is that) and he smiled.
The end.
Rating: 8.3/10 for horror movie
European horror is nice, unlike Hollywood's one. Haha. Just like last time I watched "El Habitacion de Nino" :)
